I had several clips cadmium plated that should be painted black. Is there a way to paint these pieces AND have the paint stick? Any special prep to the plating? I was going to lightly scuff the surface with a Scot-Brite pad, use a self etching primer and top coat with semi-gloss black paint. Are there any issues with this plan? I understand that Cadmium plating is toxic and I plan on wearing the correct mask. Thanks

i lightly dust the cad plated part in my glass header, then go with the epoxy self-etching primer, then top coat. your method will work if you abrade the part thoroughly but glass beading is quicker. good luck, mike

When you say abrade the part thoroughly - do you mean remove all of the plating? I do not have a glass beader or any type of blasting tool.

The more small scratches the better the paint will adhere. Abrading with the pad to completely dull the surface and then the etching primer should be okay.

A coat of zink crommate paint first would be a good idea. I always used it on aluminum.

If you google "removing cadmium plating" you will find a variety of methods, some of which sound scary. I use a quick dip in mild phosphoric acid (old school auto body metal prep). According to the web, muriatic acid, vinegar or even Easy Off Oven Cleaner will work at different speeds. By the way, gun bluing that comes in a bottle will make the striped parts look close to the original black. It does not offer much corrosion protection however.
