When my car was being painted, some over spray got under the tarp covering the engine and onto the new spark plug wires. I believe these original style wires have a clear lacquer finish. What is the best way to clean off the paint? If I use lacquer thinner, does that remove the clear coating on the outside? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Using LQ thinner used sparingly should be fine

I would say the lacquer thinner could remove the lacquer coating.
Are you sure the car wwas repainted with lacquer?

If you are unable to remove the overspray, the wires can be repainted.

Would mineral spirits work ? I have seen it used as a cleaner for paint brushes.

The over spray came through the firewall when the lower half of the dash was painted - a light gray. The paint is a single stage polyurethane. I have sent an e-mail to the place I purchased the wire set to see if they can tell me how to remove the over spray WITHOUT damaging the wire set.

Have you checked with the painter or a paint supplier?

I have not heard back from Chevs of the 40's where I purchased the wires from. The paint suppler did not want to commit to any remover (too many lawyers in this world I guess). I used some Brakleen on a small spot and it took off the overspray. When the weather gets warmer, I plan on cleaning all the wires and re-applying the clear outer coating. If the wires fail, I will do what I had to do in the past - buy another set.

HE, Merely order an new set of wires. Put the old ones in a plastic shopping bag and toss them in the trunk or wherever. Problem solved. You're welcome, Charlie

I used some rubbing compound and it took the over spray right off without removing the gloss lacquer finish.
