I was trying to bench test a gas gauge. Six volt supply, good sending unit 0-35 Ohms, could only get an empty reading. I discovered the gas gauge housing has to be connected to ground. Same as when mounted in the dash. Hope this helps someone.

Yep, the gauge ain't a gonna work without being grounded.

When testing a gas gauge on the bench with a gas tank sending unit, the gas gauge has to be grounded to the sending unit and the sending unit (or the gas gauge) has to be grounded to the power supply.
