On a 1950 passenger car, the new style exhaust pipe flange is different from the old style one. You can see the old flange is actually welded to the pipe so part of the pipe is inserted into the exhaust manifold. The new one is just rolled over to a 90 degree bend with a loose fitting flange (not pictured). Which gasket is better to use - the doughnut style or the flat gasket?

The 1949 and 1950 original 1949 and 1950 exhaust pipe had the welded on flat flange and used the flat gasket. The 1951 went back to the thick asbestos packing ring, loose flange and the end of the exhaust pipe had a fixed tapered ring atached to stop the packing in place. The fixed ring was about 3/4" below the end of the pipe and the packing slipped over the pipe, a small amount of the pipe exrended out above the packing to prevent the packing to be actually fully exposed to the hot exhaust. After 1951 if you bought a new exhaust pipe from Chevrolet for a 1949 or 1950 you got the 1951 style pipe which required the used of the loose flange and thick packing ring. I would guess you have a pipe that just the end is flarted out and the pack is supposed to sit ont top of the end. This exposes the packing to direct exhaust heat and will not work well or for long and make it difficult keep the packinng in place.

I'm not sure what the '51 fixed tapered ring style looks like. Could I try duplicating the old rusty fixed version in the photo above. Leave 3/4" of straight pipe to insert into the manifold, weld the loose flange in place and use the flat gasket?

Steves picture is not correct. Must be a replacement pipe. I am looking for a correct picture. If I can't find one I will do a drawing tomorrow.

I am not surprised that it is not original as it's 65 years old. It will be good to see pictures of an original set up.

Yes, and on a genuine GM pipe it was permenentaly installed in the end of the exhaust pipe....it didn't come out. I just sent a drawing to Steve.

I got the drawing and with the above picture I now have a better idea of what the pipe should look like.

Steve, can you send me the drawing? The drawing of the part I copied from only comes in 2" and 2 1/2" OD. My system is 1 3/4" OD.

I will do that, but keep in mind it is a hand drawing and not to size.
