I was freshening up one of my spare generators and noticed it had a dry bushing in the rear. I had the unit apart so I removed the plate over the bushing area. I see that the oiler inlet leads to a catch area below the bushing. There is also a hollowed out feed that goes up around the other side of the bushing and enters the bushing in the middle. Inside there is a piece of material that looks like the sheath from a piece of wire. I am wondering if this is supposed to be a wick to bring the oil up to the bushing. Right now I don't understand how the oil gets up into the bushing.

There should be a wick in the passage. The oil soaks into the wick which inturn oils the shaft and bushing. Years ago the rear bushing went out on my '34. The wick had turned to stone and failed to carry oil to the proper location.

Gene, thanks. I guess I will look for some suitable wick material. I think what is in there now isn't correct.

Take a rear end frame off of one of the other generators and check it out. They fit 1940-1951. New ones are probably still available.
