I have a 2011 5.3 Silverado K1500. I installed a K&N air kit a couple of months ago to increase power and hopefully increase gas mileage when pulling my enclosed trailer. I am preparing for the 2,200 mile (one way) pull in August to go to the Anniversary Meet. I am a flat lander so I don't know if the increased power have been achieved yet. It appears that my gas mileage has gone down on normal driving without the trailer.

My question is: should I have cleared the "computer" to allow it to "relearn" with the newly installed K&N air kit?

I know my gas mileage tracking with the K&N kit has been in winter weather so maybe I don't remember my winter gas mileage but I was hoping to see an improvement.

Any comments or advice?

No need to do anything with the computer, not a big enough change. Be sure you do not over oil the filter it can cause the mass air flow sensor to read lean, the oil will insulate the very fine wires (frog hairs). Cheap air filters can cause the same problems.

Why would a K&N filter kit increase gas mileage or power?
The O2 sensor and and other devices would correct the fuel/air ratio to what is specified.
Will be interesting to see.

Wide open throttle might breath a little better.

With the quest for good gas mileage todays car makers usually have it nailed down pretty good right from the factory.
If they can increse the mileage by .05 % they will do it as long as the emmisions stay in line.

I can only tell you what I read.

On the TrailBlazer forum, some K&N folks have reported reductions in their fuel economy.

Thanks for all the information. I will see what power improvements, if any, I see during my trip across the country in August.

See you in Tahoe for the 55th Anniversary Meet.

Dave,

I installed a Magnaflow muffler in my 2005 Avalanche (5.3L). Then I installed a S&B cold air intake kit. I have notice a difference when towing.

The old saying if you have more exhaust going out you need more intake coming in.

I recently towed a Nissan Quest Van. We used a dolly, but the van weighs ~4,000 lbs. My trailer weighs ~ 3,400 lbs. It pulled over the hills here with no problem and it seemed to have more power.

I have also heard that the computer "learns" as you increase the load and adjusts. I towed thousands of miles before the installation of these two items and my observations are that my Avalanche handles towing much better after I installed them.

I have not calculated fuel mileage since the changes.

Regards,

Jim M.
