I have a '68 Chevelle SS396. It's been restored to stock condition. All numbers match but block numbers have paint on them now. I've never entered it in a judged meet but I intend to do so this summer. When I read the judging rules, I see deductions for things like my 15 in rally wheels (14 in. were factory issue) and my rally stripes on the hood and rear deck.
Since both of these items were available as Chevrolet dealer installed items in 1968, why are they deductions?
Also, I've added led tail/brake lights in the original lenses and a third brake light. Will those cause deductions too?
Happy Motoring, Bill

If 15" wheels were not available from the factory and the judge notices they are 15", points will be deducted. If the stripes were available from the factory in any manner they will not cause a deduction. There having documentation would be suggested. The LED tail lights probably won't be obvous but a third brake light would cost points.
Just running down the option list I do not see 15" wheels as an option.

Bill, The owner should have the documentation to support any questionable items if questioned

If you were a good enough customer with your Chevrolet dealer they would do most whatever they could to make you happy & sell you the car including putting Z/28 stripes or Corvette wheels on it. The optional stripe for a 1968 Chevelle SS396 would go over the nose & down by the rockers almost all the way to the back. I would say having documentation would be a must...Joe

That is true but if the Corvette wheels were not lsted as an option they would be nixed. You would need to furnish documentation.

You might want to review the section on judging regarding safety improvements to see if it helps regarding your question on the lighting.

Happy Motoring, Bill If you scroll down to pages 6 through 8, you will see the 1968 Chevelle options and dealer installed accessories. 15" wheels are not listed. Option ZJ7 shows rally wheel hubcaps and trim rings, but does not specify 14" or 15". Rally stripes are not listed. https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/do...its/Chevelle/1968-Chevrolet-Chevelle.pdf

The ZJ7 option would only be for 14" wheels as there was no option for 15" tires...Joe

Since there is at least one detailed response, I think that I"ll just MERGE this one with the other one.
When you read this note again, they will all be in the same thread.

It seems strange to me that turn signals and seat belts are acceptable on older cars that did not have them as original equipment (like my '31) but LED tail/stop light bulb inserts and third brake lights are not.
Does anyone know if these two things have been discussed as revisions to the judging rules or not? If not, how do I get these onto an agenda for evaluation?

Good question and I was involved with those decisions, and the reasons were NOBODY younger then 40 years old knows what hand signals are and seat belts are needed if you want to install a car seat, or secure a young person

You're correct about my 15" wheels and tires. They were not offered in the official factory or dealer installed options catelogs. Does this mean I get 35 points deducted for wheels and 40 points deducted for tires?

Yep, will do.
Also, it says repeatedly, "an approved fire extinguisher..." but I can't find anywhere that there is a description or list of "approved". What is "approved" supposed to be?

Every Fire Extinguisher should have a UL Number on it and an "Approved" number on it.

Itust be the proper type of extinguisher for eletrical and gasoline fires. I don't recall the letter class but it used to be printed in the judging manual.

The letter code is B-C and it should state that it is for use with gasoline-oil-and electrical fires.

There will be no date on the Extinguisher only a paper tag from a Fire Extinguisher inspection service.
