Brandie, I have a '97 Silverado with 7.4l and automatic. A month ago i drove it in with intention of figuring out occasional motor turning off while driving. Very disconcerting when in traffic!! With advice from my 45 yr old son via phone I began the search by replacing the fuel pump- no easy job. Then truck would not start and has not since despite MANY hours of diagnosis and replacement of relays oil psi sending unit, fuel psi regulator. I own the shop manuals for this- all 8 inches thick of them and read the diagnostic procedures then performed what I could. Since I live in the middle of no where with the nearest Chevy dealer 50 miles away this is MY problem to solve. Several points to consider- 1. GM had many electrical problems with these trucks. 2. without the proper "scanner" and considerable knowledge of how to interpret test results an owner can only replace sensors and other devices based on advice from "experienced" folks or finding a reputable shop to do it for them. 3. Virtually everything electrical in these trucks is tied to the VCM (computer). That has only gotten worse in the last 15 yrs. So there are dozens of connections leading to or from this monster that can have oxidized/ frayed /or broken. everything is inter-connected so a circuit problem in one place can have impact else-where. 4. The programning of the VCM is not something GM cared to share with the world. Even the dealer shops have limited knowledge of this but ARE equipped with test devices (at 100$ per hour). So, unless you wish to give a Chevy dealer full rein to solve the problem (s) you/I are back to number 2 above. Currently my brainy son thinks it could be the ignition switch--something the 'old' GM had experience screwing up. Then again my son has replaced his Chevy truck fleet with F***s in the last two years after tiring of Chevy shop time. Good luck pursuing your problem. Maybe my discussion helped Dan

I am not familiar with the late model US vehicles I have found that when the dash does funny things on cranking the starter motor is drawing excessive current. Check and clean ALL electrical connections from battery to starter and the earths. If this fails have the starter motor serviced, suspect bushes/bearings allowing poling armature or worn brushes.

One of the main culprits of electrical problems at the heavy truck dealership I worked at was ground connections. We even had a situation where due to poor grounds the wire wrapped power steering hose was acting as the ground source causing it to rupture.
