Is the vacuum setup for shifting gears on the '41 Chevy necessary? I have been told that
these devices never really worked, and that while I have the transmission out, just leave off the vacuum. Is this correct? Thanks, chevy

Not correct. A working vacuum shift is a pleasure to drive. If you intend to remove the vacuum unit you will need the kit that was available. Agrin

"Hotshots" had a hard time with the vacuum shift, they didn't maintain anything except the curb feelers and mud flaps and they would try to "speed shift" them. The folks in VCCA seem to do ok with the "suction shift"

Used to ride a friend´s 47 and it didn´t have the vac shift. And it was alittle bit recalcitrant to change gears. Never drove a good one, but I think a newer gbox from a 49/54 might be installed.

Thanks for the information. I will keep the vacuum. I order the rubber parts from Chevs of the 40s. However, how do I get BK oil to lubricate the vacuum? The directions say that I need to add 1 oz of the BK oil. Also, do I still need to get a kit? Will the insides of the chamber be OK? Are there rubber parts inside? Thanks, chevy
