#2 cylinder ..... somewhere in one of your threads, I recall you mentioning ( I think ) that #2 was a sleeved cylinder. Is that correct ?

Thinking, even if it was a sleeved cylinder, I cannot recall having a sleeve create an "engine noise concern".

I have driven I 75 to I 71 to get to northern Ohio so many times ( family is in Mentor, Ohio ), certainly would give that 235 a listen, but I have no immediate plan to get to Ohio real soon.

I am thinking #2 was sleeved but that was 25 years ago when I rebuilt the motor so my memory is a little fuzzy,it looks like I will be dropping the pan and pulling the head to get #2 piston and rod out to see what is going on and report back. If alot was not done to that block I would just run it until it blows but I want to see what went wrong.

Don't believe it will KABOOM, based on your descriptions.

You have spoken of a "rattle", not a "knock".

I'm still thinking of a timing issue or a runaway, loose piece of carbon, bouncing on top of a piston.

Time will tell. dance

I think the issue is with the piston/wrist pin. If it was a rod bearing it would have let loose by now after running it for a couple years.

A valid point .... no KABOOM on this engine.

Drive it like you stole it, you'll find the noise.

Dropping the pan this weekend, the noise got a little louder today and was able to trace to #2 so time for the motor to come apart. I hope its a cracked piston and not a bad rod bearing,if its a bad rod bearing the other motor is going in.

Its the rod bearings and I think I did not clean the oil passages in the crank good enough and the bearings are scarred and the upper halves are down to copper with only 10,000 miles, crank looks good so I am going to put new bearings in and see how it does.
