I'm rebuilding the 216 in my 51 and have a question about which way to go with the oil pump. I cleaned up the original, checked clearances(everything looked nice and tight)put in a new gasket and reassembled. This engine had 90,000 on it and had good oil pressure when I took it apart.Would I be better off to get an NOS or new pump or should this pump be fine? Maybe a new one would be cheap insurance but honestly I don't see any wear in the old one.Gears and shaft looked like new and there is no play in anything. Has anyone ever had a 216 pump go bad?

Hi brjr51,

That pump may easily last another 90,000 miles, but you will sleep a lot better if you install a NOS or NORS pump.

More than likely your old pump is fine. However I wouldn't even consider putting it back in. New pump too cheap and too easy to take a chance.
