The starter on my 32 is busted up pretty bad. The local repair shop informed me that the Bendix bolt sheared off and buggered up the armature and the field coils, busted the spring on the Bendix too. So, $150 bucks later, I will have a rebuilt starter. The rebuilder asked if I had ever used a 12 volt battery to start the car and I have not so he then indicated that the engine had "kicked back" and had broken the Bendix spring precipitating the breaking of the bolt etc. My question is, how? Thanks folks....

Do you pull the spark cable out when starting? If you have the timing set at 18 deg. advance that might have contributed to it kicking back.

I do.....Crazy huh? It did not kick back as what I heard was the Bendix engage; starter spin and then pop and nothing...

I had the same thing happen to me when on a six cylinder tour. Luckily it was in the hotel parking lot and a friend had a spare starter with him. I was fortunate that the only damage was the broken bolt. I did have a problem the day before with the carb and stalling so I had to restart several times and most likely that's when the bolt was weakened.

When I bought the car over 8 years ago, the starter was in bad shape and I had it fixed then. Worked fine until last Friday. Oh well, it will be fixed and off we go again. Funny, the rebuilder asked how well it started and I told him it starts better than my Avalanche!!!!

Just retrieved my starter from the rebuilder and he replaced the spring with a rubber snubber as he called it...No bolt or spring. Seems to work the same as ever but a bit quieter. Who'd have thunk?

Very interesting. I have not heard of eliminating the spring so keep us posted on how it works out.
