When I bought my 1947 sedan the 216 engine had been replaced with a 235 from a 1953 car. The engine is now rebuilt and runs good. The rear seal was replaced with a rope seal and will leak alittle when I run around town. But if I go on the freeway and run 55 to 60 mph for awhile when I get home the Trans is covered in oil. I was thinking maybe there is too much pressure in the crank case. I am using the vent tub off of the 216.The motor has 40 psi at that speed. Any ideas? Thanks mark47

Clean off the rear of the engine and drive it again. Check to see if the oil is coming from the rear of the valve cover and running down the back.

The 235 and 216 vents are the same. The most inmportant thing is for the vent to be clean. The interior baffles can plug up with sludge. If you can see fumes coming from the vent at idle you know its working some what.

Thanks guys .I checked the back of the value cover and it was clean. After a run there will be a drip of oil on the floor from the vent and oil all over the inside of the vent. That made me think that mybe too much pressure in the crack case.

There is a baffle inside the block to deflect oil from entering the tube....if thats missing it can throw oil from the vent.To ckeck, remove the vent. The hole should be blocked by the baffle about an inch down. While the vent is off clean it out.Soak it in mineral sprits and flush out with pressure from a garden hose. You may be surprised as to what is hiding in there.
If the car is a stick block the hole on the flywheel cover and take a little ride. When you get home open the hole and see if oil drips out.If it does you will know its probably the rear main.
