I just read this thread from end to end and decided what a great way to end the year. Still grinning. But Gene is right. You don't sell a million cars a year if you have a dud engine.Ask the British! My 39 216 runs precision mains and shell big ends with aluminium pistons and I have to admit I don't miss the bottom end rumble and piston pin rattle but the tappet noise and the rear main and universal oil drip always reminds me there is a friendly old Chevy under the hood.

Charlie,
I wasn't aiming my comments at you as I know were comments were in jest. Just trying to put some positive notes on a 216-old style 235 engine.

Well now a new problem! I found a nice engine. I was told it was a 216 from a 52 Chevrolet. They pulled the 6 to put in a small block. Runs very nice. However, I cannot interpret the numbers:

The head number is 3835913

0034663F54Y- left of Distributor on block.

Above starter on the edge - 00N1J233

It does not look like a 216 on the distributor side of the engine.
Looks somewhat like a 216 on the manifold side of the engine.

Just got it home. Will take pictures later. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

F54Y is a 1954 passenger car with Power Glide engine. Head is a 1954 or 1955 head.
To use the engine front motor mount bolt holes need to be drilled in the front mounting plate using the 1947 plater as a guide.
Probably one of the most desireable 235 engines for a 1947.
Must use 1954 distributor and manifolds and carburetor. Will (or should) have an automatic choke.

Interesting - seems everything is there that needs to be. It does have the original bell housing and the transmission which is a stick and not a automatic.

Will need to find a distributor in that it seems that he pulled that and put it on another vehicle he owned.

Thank you for the information.

Unless you read the stampings by the distributor incorrectly, your engine was born with a powerglide attached to it.

It came from Flint and is the 125 H.P.version of the 235.

The stick shift bell housing is not used with the powerglide.

Soooo, someone made a swap from P.G. to stick, in its 61 year history. dance

F.Y.I., the 1954 P.G. distributor is labeled 1112396.

Also should have the 1954 starter as it has more cranking power.

You should make sure that the pilot bushing is in the end of the crankshaft when you install the engine in your car. I have heard of guys having trouble getting a pilot bushing into the crankshaft of a powerglide engine.

Waiting for all you wonderful guys to give me all the necessary helps before I take on the project of replacing the engine.

I will be able to keep the engine that is currently in the car intact so that should I sell the car the new owner could have the original.

It is a little cold out just now so I will be putting together a plan of attack to use once the weather warms up just a little.

Sure am grateful for all you guys and the imput that I get from you.

Blessings - Art

Speaking of it warming up so we can work on our old cars, does anyone know who that guy is who does some Youtube videos of him working on and explaining things on more modern cars. He voice sounds like he is from New England area. a little hard to understand.

He is always wearing gloves and layers of clothing and he seems very knowledgable about cars and all the gadget on them. He seems to be cold but very tolerable of cold conditions. He is interesting. He may be a Canadian. At least he's a nice one. Agrin

If we could recruit him to join the chat, I think he would be a wonderful asset.

Just saying...

Thanks for all the help with this link.

Going to begin a new link entitled - Accepting suggestions for my 1947 engine swap.

216 being removed from the 47.

235 from a 54 Chevrolet being put into the 47.

Thanks for suggestions and recommendations for this project.
