My observation from cars / wheels that I have seen, the spacing from the hubcap to the first stripe is about 1/8" then a space of about 1/8" to the second stripe. Yes, the spare should match the 4 on the ground. Can not answer the trim ring vs stripe question as I have the 15" wheels with the full wheel discs ( covers/ hubcaps ).

I have no stripes on the four road wheels of my '39 as it has full wheel covers that would hide the stripe. The spare has the original paint and stripe and is in almost mint condition.

Here's what I have on mine, which after looking at these I wonder if they weren't 'touched up' at some point over its 27 years of service (car was stored in 1974-2010).

My measurements are 1/2 inch stripes with 1/8 separation in between the two in the center. They look wider than most, so I'm wondering if they have been redone at some point.

And the spare that I said was just black? Well...I think I see stripes under a recoat or maybe just faded. I may get a little 2000 grit paper and see what I can find tomorrow morning when I work on it. You can make out the outline, right?

The stripes do look a bit wide compared to measurments I have made and books I have reveiwed,I think 3/16 is the recomented width..The spacing looks perfect

Yeah, I thought they were smaller...so I'm guessing someone touched these up a long time ago. I'll see if I can uncover the ones on the spare tire later today and get back in touch.

Well I sanded a little of the top coat of black off of my spare tire rim today and came up with the same stripes as the others. Who's to say what that means, they may have been redone...

Are you saying that it is 1/2" from outside of one to the outside of the other? 1/2" total.

Russell: Each stripe on my wheel is 1/2" in width, with 1/8" gap in between stripes. I'm pretty sure I was accurate, but keep in mind I was a C+ math student and I did remodel my house...and none of my walls are straight now. :)

This thread is starting to show it's age, I just celebrated my 76th birthday month before last.....(I do remember that!)

Come to think of it, I don't remember much at all! It couldn't be because I celebrated my 68th B.D day before yesterday...could it?

It seems that I've seen a tool sold at Hershey that held a brush and would rotate 360 degrees for painting the wheel stripes. Are they still around.

Unlike Gene on this one, I'd still like to have the stripes on even if an accessory covers them. Plus, anyone can see around the accessory to where the edge of the outer stripe where it crosses the valve stem opening. Or not, depending whether it is there or not. If for show, points off.

I agree with Charlie. When I had my Fleetline judged at a VCCA 15 years ago the judge looked at my wheels to see if my outer stripe was hidden under my stainless trim ring. He could just see the edge of it and was satisfied so no deduction. Maybe the criteria for that has changed by now but if your serious about going for high scores on the judging sheet, I would check with someone who is a judge at the national VCCA meets.

Bruce and Russell (and all other participants of this thread),

I saw your earlier comments about pinning one thread to the other and about "dueling posts". I also thought both posts should be kept together. I conferred with Bill Barker as to which way to combine them. I used our MERGE function...my intent was to tack the "48 fleetline wheel pinstriping" thread to the end of the "Wheel pin striping" thread. Well, that didn't happen as intended. It attached page 1 to page 1, page 2 to page 2, etc. so that the thread pages alternate. Kinda mixes the posts up a little bit, but all the information is still here.

Good idea idea......bad results doh!!!

One demerit for this Moderator trying to do something good and messing it up.
Sorry guys

Sorry about the results Ken (and ruscar... and XLVIIdriver... and MrMack... and everyone else!). In the past 11 years, I think I've only merged 2 different threads.. Couldn't remember exactly how it merged... and the documentation is non-existent.

So, it appears that the merge was similar to shuffling playing cards... and that isn't good for logical reasons.

KEN - Welcome to the MODERATOR Feedback Club. If you check, you might find a sign taped to your BACK that says "Kick Me". Ha!!

Mr. Mack, Quirky, isn't it? I couldn't find the end of the post either nor did I have the Reply, et al, capability. I started looking around and discovered I was no longer logged in!! I can't explain that as I am always logged in. I logged in and then everything, including the size of the post, was fine. Beamer
