When the front mat and rear carpet is in place no floor shows. Most of the floor had a black tar paper like material stuck to it.Did not come all the way up to the door opening though-about a 2" gap.

The rubber mat with the carpet insert was considered very luxurious in the 1948 car.The 1940-48 models Special DeLuxe, Fleetmaster, Fleetline models had the carpet insert. It was eleminated in 1949.A rubber mat was again used in the top models except the 1950 Bel Air hard top was the first Chevrolet to have full carpet in the front. The Bel Air line in 1953 and up had a full carpet.

The gap of the insulation is covered by the floor mat.
It is possible the the gap was left to form a little air space so any water running off the edge of the floor mat could dry. cool
