How do you check what rear end is in my car. 1947 fleetmaster. I think it has a 4:11. I would like to find a 3:73. I read somewhere that some of the cars came with this ring and pinon.Any ideas? Thanks.

You can pull off the rear cover and count teeth.

Also can place car on a level surface -Have someone push car for ONE wheel reveloution WITH TRANSMISSION IN HIGH GEAR.Mark harmonic balancer and count its reveloutions while the wheel makes just one reveloution. With 4.11 the balancer should turn just over four times.wITH THE 3.73 REAR END IT WILL TURN OVER 3 AND 3/4 TIMES.

The 3.73 rear end was an option in 1947 and few were ordered that way.

The 1953-54 stcks used a 3.70 as standard equipment-Power Glides had the 3.55 from 1950-54.Either one of these can be transplanted to your 1947.The 3.70 is a nice combination with a 216.Especially if you live in a hilly area.
