As I look at more pics of the 216 engine,I see more and more differences bettween mine and the pictures. The only marking I can make out on it is a big 48 in a circle near the distributor. My car is a 48 fleetline and I aways thought the engine was a 216,even though when I bought it,the engine was painted blue  I've seen many pics where the oil filler cap is on the valve cover and mine is near the distributor...Do you think someone painted my engine the wrong color at one time????? or is it a 235???...chef...

The circle you have will be found on 1948 and newer. The 1948 was the last year to have the oil filler on the road draft tube as you have. the 49 valae cover has the oil filler but these parts can be switched between any engines. Also the blue color was also something some one must have done in the later years.Check and see what the engine number is. It is STAMPED IN TO the block and located 0n the horizontal space between the dist. and the dip stick.I believe the number should begin with a letter F on the 1948 engines. You may have to scrape off the paint to read the engine number.
