Anyone have a Delco-Packard parts book that has the part number for both the positive and negative spring-ring battery cables for a 64 Chevy Impala SS with a 327/300HP engine with no air and a 4-speed transmission? How about the GM numbers too? thx. Billu38

This is what I found from three different sources and three different dates. Four speed and Super Sport option do not affect the part number of the cable, only A/C and engine size
Chevrolet Master Parts Book March 1, 1966 group 2.341 Ground part#29870209 (24" ctr/ctr) group 2,342 Positive part# 2987249 (53" ctr/ctr) They also had many other applications.
1963 and down has a different part number, and is 1" shorter (52" ctr/ctr). What I did find very interesting that there was a TSB, Bulletin DR 501, stating that the early 62 passenger cars with the 327 engines the positive cable would come into contact with the fuel and brake lines. The plastic retainer was to be removed and the cable was to be routed to gain an extra inch. This makes sence because the 327 engines were the only small block offered in 62 with the 3/8 fuel line, which was routed differently then the 5/16" line used on the 283 engines. This was due to the fact dual exhaust was no longer available on the 283 engine, as well as four barrel carburators. Makes me wonder why it took until the 1964 production run to make this change? I checked the Chevrolet P&A 30 printed 8-74 and there is a different part number given for the ground group 2.341 ground part# 8907363 (now listed as 36" ctr/ctr) positive same as above
From AC Delco Wire and Cable Catalog Dated 10-77 ground cable is part# 4F30 (I presume 30 is for 30" the cable is 6" longer then the original and 6" shorter then the replacement offered 3 years prior, now applications are begining to become combined and superseded as the car is getting older) Positive part# 4F53 ( It would be safe to presume the 53 is for 53")
One thing to keep in mind is that the GM replacement positive cables only have tail with a crimp connector to splice to the original regulator feed. So you would have to cut your original wire and splice it in. There was no splice point on the factory installed cable. They also may have different type of post terminal then the original had. Replacement and function are different then restoration. I have used the AC/Delco replacements offered over the counter and they are all that way, and have been for some time. There are some real good quality reproductions of the factory installed cable. I have used the ones from Show Cars a on a few cars for myself as well for others and they were dead on, expensive but good. I hope this was of help to you Regards

Thanks John...a wealth of information...that's the reason I asked the question...books I had showed conflicting lengths and were different from what I think is original on my car...I have a positive Delco-Packard cable I bought years ago and it has a connector already on it for the regulator...I need to check the length on it...Bill

The number you have is for 1964 283 V-8 and 6 Cylinder. Is your book a Chevrolet of Canada book?

I should have explained better my reason for asking if it was for a Chevrolet of Canada Book. Not every engine offered in the states was offered for sale in Canada, and I am pretty sure (I have to check) that the 327 was even available in those years in Canada. Is it a Chevrolet Master Parts Book? Printed by General Motors? Published for General Motors? Is there a date of printing? Is it for an jobber vendor parts, or for a Chevrolet Dealer? Is it a flat rate book listing parts prices and labor? I can not find a publisher or a location of publication on any of my GM or AC/Delco Books, only dates.

It is a flat rate parts manual published in 1967. I worked for Chrysler for 35 years and I found the parts for Chryslers to be accurate but who knows. I believe we had 327 engines in Canadian '64 Chevs and in our Pontiacs as well. I had a '62 Pontiac with a 327, a '63 and '64 Pontiac with 283's. My father had a '66 Acadian (like a Chevy II) with a 283 as well. But, of course I'm just quoting the numbers listed. No guarantees.

I just pulled out a Delco catalog from Jan 1970 and it says the following
1964 Chevrolet with 283,327 w/o AC and 409 takes 4W53 and 327 w/AC takes 4W19-These are spring-ring cable, battery to switch.

I have the same application listed in my 1977 Delco Book and Chevrolet had listed a different part number in 1966. We are begining to parts become superceded and combined as these cars were getting older
