An early morning start today to begin this year's Eastern Six Cylinder Tour to Cavendish Vermont. I left Bolton Ont. at 6:30am and headed for Burlington to meet Paul and Maggie Rozon at 8:00. As I arrived they were just finishing packing up the 1953, so Paul and I went to take a peek at his 1931 roadster, which was just reassembled after a paint job. The car is beautiful and is now just waiting for a new top.

Off we headed... and got three blocks to the first traffic jam and the start of rain! Through the construction, and down the Queen Elizabeth Way towards our border crossing at Lewiston. This was the spot where I was going to add the picture of my temperature gauge pegged to the "H" as we waited 20 minutes in line... but I have now discovered that I left the camera cord at home mad!! I'll have to make a stop tomorrow and get a cord, or there will be a lot of disappointed people reading this! Two minutes later and things started to look better... the temp gauge came back to the middle as we got back into the cool air, and all of a sudden the speedometer started reading right too! Funny how that works! I quickly caught back up to Paul and Maggie, who were being "escorted" away from the border by a police car. (you folks are serious about your parking down here!) It was then that I realized that I'm missing my photographer this week too! The beautiful Jane is back to work teaching this week, so is missing out on all of the fun.

Our first stop is at "Smokey Joe's" for gas. Paul will drive hundreds of miles to save a couple bucks! I have no idea what we paid for gas... at some point I'm going to learn gallons and USD! I was too busy ranting about the refuelling process in this country. In Canada we have a two step process...

Step 1) Fill car.
Step 2) Pay for gas.

After two fuel stops today, I'm not sure I have your process right.

Step 1) Have credit card and bank card declined. Message... "See Attendant"
Step 2) Attempt to pump the gas with out the cards, and expect to pay cash when I "see attendant". Have pump continue to beep at me.
Step 3) See Attendant.
Him "how much gas would you like?"
Me "A full tank, please"
Him "I don't know how much that is. You have to give me a dollar amount."
Me "I don't know how much it is either... at home we pump it first to find out"
Step 4) Huddle with Paul... Guesstimate twenty bucks. Hand the man a Twenty.
Step 5) Pump $20. It fills to about 3/4's. The tank whistle is screaming "MORE!!"
Step 6) Go back in and ask if I can fill it to the top
Him "you have to pre pay that"
Me "You're kidding! So if I pay $10, and there's change due, I have to come back in here again?"
Him "yes, but I'll be able to refund the amount owing..."
Step 7) Return to car shaking head. Opt out of the final 3 steps and decide to go with 3/4's of a tank.

At our next stop I find out how your country is getting screwed at the pumps. I prepay $25 and manage to fit $24.64 into the car. You bet I'm going in to get my 36 cents!! I bet a lot of people drive away leaving a lot of change there! It also occurs to me that the lineups in the store are so long because everyone has to take 3 trips through them!

Okay, rants over. It takes about 55 seconds behind the wheel of my Chevy to make me forget all of the annoying stuff! Paul has picked a beautiful route. I still have no idea how we got to Utica for our first night. Lots of 2 lane blacktop with nice rolling hills. A couple U turns and detours, but somehow we got here. I'm not entirely sure Paul's Garmin speaks English. At one point I was not really concentrating, and saw a sign for Mexico. I believed we were really lost! Turns out there is a Mexico NY. No Taco Bell there... seems wrong somehow! Across route 104 and 49, we saw lots of nice rustic country... Fulton, Central Square, Constantia, Rome... all nice Americana! Paul spotted a '53 4 door like his for sale. Maggie told me she managed to get her foot on the gas so we couldn't stop!! Also saw a couple shops with old Chevy's in front of them... a '55 sedan, and a '37 pickup.

Arrived at the Red Roof Inn, Utica around 6:30pm. Off to Delmonico's Italian Restaurant for dinner. Recommended! Food was great! An early morning is planned tomorrow. I'll try and work in a stop to find a camera cord!

This waking up early on my vacation is going to kill me!! Maybe it's because I can't sleep at night because I'm excited about what the next day will bring! Today I was up at 6:30am, and had the car packed and wiped off. Paul was a little slow, so I helped him wipe his car off too... realized it was all part of his plan after! We headed for McDonald's and fuelled up on coffee and breakfast. Loved their '50's Diner theme. I don't think we have this theme in Canada.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Off we headed south to Cooperstown. Some more really nice country, but now we are getting into mountains. I feel like I'm really working the car on the uphill grades, and compensate by bumping it to neutral and coasting on the downhills. Have to watch the speed on the roll... at one point I looked at the speedo, and it was at 75mph!!! Some of the uphill runs went for kilometers! Cooperstown was really scenic. I could spend a week there!

The hall was fantastic. We got to relive some history, and learnt a lot as well.

Opening day at the hall in 1939...
[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

I hit the gift shop on the way out and bought a new hat. Don't tell Jane... I'm always bugging her about her clothes shopping!! We headed into town for a rootbeer float, then headed for Vermont. At one point Paul took the worst detour/U-turn I've ever seen! Down an alley past garbage dumpsters, puddles, and a dead skunk... and came out beside a Radio Shack!! I bought the cord for the camera. Paul claims he saw the Radio Shack and planned the turn. I think he got lucky!!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Next was another refuelling adventure. Same thing again this time. I still don't get it! At our dinner tonight I was sitting next to a lady from near New Jersey. She told me it was state law there that they pump the gas for you... and it's cheaper than everywhere else!! Sometimes progress isn't all it's cracked up to be! Anyway, the last 3 hours we really motored. Up and down the mountains and into Vermont.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Arrived at the hotel around 4pm. Lots of folks here already. We heard that the Longmuir's have broken down near Syracuse. No word on them yet. Met with friends from the past couple tours and rode up the hill to dinner with Pat & Barry Staples. Apparently Pat will be reporting to Jane if I misbehave!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Dinner was great, and we got to hear more Great Race stories from John Hudson. Rumour is that they are going to attempt a one day "timed tour" using the great race rules. For those that don't know, the Great Race is a month long tour where each day is timed out. the participants must come as close as they can to an average speed using only a watch and a speedometer. After a month, the results come down to seconds! Also found out that next years tour will be... in COOPERSTOWN!!! The extra miles this year were still worth it!

Brewster, Are there any cars of the 30s on the tour? The picture was all modern.

Jim... Where are you??!! We count on you for the early iron!! I'll remedy this oversight now.

This morning we started early again. All of this excitement is keeping me awake! I was up at 6:00am, and headed outside to shammy off the car. The roof was frozen solid! Brrr...!! Back in I came for breakfast! We all went out and warmed up the cars after breakfast...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Our start at 8:30 had us head straight into the mountains... and 10 miles of construction!! The tour organizers had contacted the construction company and organized to have the road watered down until we were through around 9:30. The flagmen really helped get us all through in large groups, and the site was pretty clean for a construction area.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

After the construction it was smooth sailing. Lots of winding roads and even a covered bridge. I picked up a passenger today, Hubie Hein joined me, as his 1932 is still under restoration. It was good that he was there, as I needed his navigation skills later! It's always great to meet folks from different areas as well.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

We headed to Lake Sunapee where we went on a lake boat lunch cruise. The lake reminded me of our Muskoka area in Canada, but surrounded by mountains. The lunch was great... and the boat didn't sink. When Maggie googled it before, the first hit was a news article about how it had sunk last January at its mooring!

Here's your early cars, Jim!

On our way out to the Irish pub now... more later!

Tuesday morning started with a lot of fun in the parking lot! We met for breakfast at 7:00 AM, then Steve (m006840 on Chat) and I headed up to the castle to get some photos.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Next we headed to the lot to get our cars equipped for todays big contest! Apparently mosquitos and bugs are abundant up here, and if you ever want to get rid of them... plan an event that requires them!! Our plan was to fasten a paper plate with a drawn on target to the front of every car. The plate was then coated with a glue stick, making a sticky bug catching target. Bug hits in the centre circle are scored higher than bug hits to the rest of the plate. We had great fun affixing the targets to the cars, everyone picking spots they thought they'd get the most bug action... or the easiest clean up of two sided tape! Hubie was riding with me again today, so we were one of a few cars sporting two plates. Paul Rozon thought we needed a smile to go with our "big googley eyes", so I added some buck teeth! Pat Staples was nice enough to hunt down our first kill for us... and promptly stuck it between our teeth!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Paul Rozon somehow had his name mentioned along with Dave Minor as being guilty of adding a big fly to Dave's target before we even left the parking lot! Dave claimed he wasn't involved and was merely cleaning the car when the bug "fell" into the target with Paul's help! I'm not sure if we ever got to the bottom of it... but 10 miles later it didn't seem to matter! It poured rain! All morning! Hubie's plate flew off the car about 15 miles into the trip, so I guess he's out of the running. Most of the cars had damaged or missing plates as well.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Our first stop was at the Summer Home of Abe Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln. He made his own fortune in a multitude of businesses, including a large stake in the Pullman Railway Coach empire. The museum now maintains the restored house and a restored luxury Pullman rail coach. They have 412 acres of land and operate a working goat cheese factory. Our lunch was served here with sandwiches that included cheese from the farm.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

John Pritchard and Charlie get familiar with the goats...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Meanwhile, in the parking lot, there was quite the show for the public on their way in...

Off we went in search of a coffee, and a pumpkin. Another contest we are having is that everyone is required to buy a pumpkin, and submit them in groups of two entrants. We are not sure what the prizes are, but it has something to do with the weights of the pumpkins! I went big, and my partners, the Rozon's, went small... we'll see! Another stop at a General Store to buy gifts and a Vintage Chevrolet tin sign for the garage...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

And I should have mentioned... The Longmuir's made it to Cavendish last night! Dave got the 1935 fixed, and they drove it on the tour today, with a big thanks to John Hudson!

I've messed up, and spent too much time sleeping instead of typing! It's better when I write these while the memory is still fresh because all of the days seem to run together! You retired people have it rough trying to remember what day it is!!

Our dinner on Tuesday night was at the American Legion. The ladies put on a nice spread of salad and pot pie with apple crisp for dessert. Mmmm we are killing it on food here! There was an antique store next door that we made it through before dinner as well.

Wednesday morning started off foggy, with promises of better weather by noon. Reyanne Freeman got brave and tried out the rumble seat...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

We headed to Plymouth Notch Vermont, to the birthplace of President Coolidge. His estate is now a preserved museum, with the house that he was born in, and the house that he lived in after, still with all of the original furniture in both places that were used by the family when they lived there. We posed for our official pictures in front of the post office/general store that Coolidge's father ran in the early 20th century. The flags were all fying at half mast as it is Sept. 11th...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Longmuir, Staples and Pearce turning in front of the Coolidge home.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Once again a car show happened in the parking lot that was enjoyed by both us and the general public. Boy, those folks get a two-for-one deal on a museum visit!!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

The sun came out and burned off the fog, and the day turned into a bit of a scorcher! The mountains made for a spectacular background!

We had a picnic lunch at the Coolidge House, then had free time for the rest of the afternoon. Our small band of Canadians had a quick huddle, and decided which area of your beautiful country to invade next. We decided to go see the Quechee Gorge and antique mall, since it was only 15 miles away and was one of the options for the following day on the "Pickers Choice" tour list. The Antique mall was huge, and had lots of quality junk to see. I didn't pick anything up, but it was interesting. We had ice cream in a '50's style diner...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

and then went on to see the gorge. It was deep, and we were limited on time, so we opted to view it from the bridge and didn't hike down to the river. Pat did her best not to toss Paul in!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Back we headed to town for dinner at DJ's restaurant in Ludlow. Lot's of food, great service and price... and my camera battery was dead by this time!

I'm going to take a second here to recognize one of our incredible VCCA members. It takes a lot of courage and dedication to be in this hobby, and drive our cars as far and as often as many of us do. There are constant fears of breaking down and not having the parts, skills, tools, or knowledge to fix the cars... especially if it happens in the middle of nowhere, which seems to be a lot of Vermont!! Having a guy like John Hudson around is a blessing to all of us, especially in a time of need. John presents an award every year that is called "The John Hudson Award" to the person that helps others out with their technical issues the most every year. This seems strange, because I think all of us would agree that John Hudson should win his own award EVERY YEAR!! I also hear stories that John even fixes the Ford's when he is doing The Great Race. This year we all saw John out helping replace a sheared distributer pin and a timing adjustment in Dave Longmuir's car, as well as pulling a transmission out of a '54 for some work (I didn't catch the owner's name or hear the full problem) as well as various other small repairs around the parking lot. John's wife, Connie, must have the patience of a saint to go on "vacation" with her husband... and have him spend half of each night out in the parking lot fixing everyone else's cars! Thanks a lot John, everyone appreciates the work you do for us!

Finally... today was sleep in day!! I slept till 7:00! Up we got, and headed into town for a pancake breakfast with real Vermont maple syrup! (Not as good as Canadian maple syrup... but close! Agrin)

It was "Pickers Choice" day for the tours, so we opted for a shorter tour that stopped to view two local car restoration places. The first was Mark Gomez, the owner of Green Mountain Classics. The visit was to view his personal collection of cars and antique signage. The pictures speak for themselves! Of note is a 1974 Corvette owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and used in an advertising poster a few years ago...

I did not catch the owner's name of the next shop, but I do know the fellow was over in our hotel lot helping fix the '54 with the transmission trouble a few days ago. He was driving this beautiful 1931 Chrysler Phaeton...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

He also owned various other early cars...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Next it was on to Subway for lunch. I snapped this pic of my navigator, Hubie Hein, whom we made an "Honorary Canadian" for the week! canada We tried to get him to sing Oh Canada! at the awards banquet, but he would have none of it!

There seems to be a small blue car in some of the photos. I assume that because it is a six cylinder it "qualified" for the tour??????

Ha! We questioned that too! I'm not able to tell you who owns it because they are registered under another vehicle in the tour book. They had some last minute trouble with their early car when loading it, so brought the Corvair instead! I hope we disqualified them from the mosquito mashing contest!

I was reasonably sure that it was an accommodation for a sick qualified car.

The closing banquet was held in the tent at the top of the hill on Thursday night. I am sure that whomever Tony and Pat Daniels put in charge of the weather planned the week almost perfectly as far as putting the rain at the right times. Although rain did ruin our mosquito mashing fun, that was the only time it really rained when the cars were involved. At the banquet... it poured! All was dry under the big tent, with the only casualty being the sound system that had extension chords that run outside. When it went down, we were down to our final two speakers anyway. Dave Minor and John Palmer have never been accused of being shy or quiet, so it didn't seem to hurt the show!

John Palmer speaks about next year's tour in New York State...

One of the best things about the Eastern Six Cylinder tour is the awards presentation. A lot of VCCA members are much like myself... we own a driver car, or a plain old two or four door car, and we sit quietly while the awards are handed out to the trailer queens or fancy red convertibles. Not on these tours! Our award show had prizes for things like who could mash the most mosquitos with the front of their Chevy? Who could team up with another couple and buy two pumpkins that came closest to 21 pounds... the sum of adding the firing order of a Chevy Six? Who was a first time participant that drove their Chevy the furthest? Who helped others in mechanical need? And who showed the most VCCA spirit? Every single person that attended had a chance at most of the awards. I've made a horrible mistake by not writing down the names of the award winners, so hopefully the blanks get filled in.

The VCCA Touring Spirit Award was given out to Mary Lou Lister. Mary Lou attends this tour every year without her husband, Ken, as he has commitments at home in Ohio this same week every year. She was seen participating in all of the fun, and helping a lot of others have fun this week as well! Way to go, Mary Lou!! winner

Friday morning dawned dreary and wet. There were a lot of early risers as some of us had far to go home, while others were heading out to Nova Scotia, Canada to continue touring!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

We had breakfast in the hotel, said our good-bye's and hit the road. Paul and Maggie were headed to see relatives in Syracuse, so were only with the Longmuirs and I part of the way. We decided to separate at the NY State Thruway, but had a nice drive through mountains and winding roads until then. We made three gas stops in the five hundred miles, as Dave has a small 8 gallon tank...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

We grabbed a coffee and muffin at Dunkin' Donuts, and up pulled the Ford guys on the way home from their tour. The owner of the Taxi said it's his wife's car... and the meter runs all the way to Ohio!!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

The other poor fellow had to rent a Uhaul, as he broke the clutch.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Soon we were back on the road, and onto the New York State Thruway. A large band of hooligans towing old Chevys quickly caught us and passed us on their way to Ohio as well...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

I also saw another sure sign that summer is nearly over...

We hit the Buffalo area around 6:30pm, after one wrong turn and running one red light. In my defence, there were 3 lights in a row. The one I was sitting at was up over the visor and I was sitting there watching the next light (the turn was really close!). It turned green, and away I went! Nobody else did... including the copper behind Dave & Vermayle!! I don't know if he didn't see it, or just didn't care! We made it through the border no problem.

I pulled into the driveway in Bolton Ontario at 8:30pm, and was greeted by a loving wife and two snuggly kitties that missed me!

A great big Thank You!! to Pat and Tony Daniels, and Steve and Gerry Dalphonse for planning and executing a really tremendous week! Thank you to all of the others that helped as well.

See you in New York State in 2013 carbana

Excellent story. As you said earlier, "I wish that I could be in two places at once!".

Both 6 cylinder tours - Northeast and Northwest sound like they were spectacular.

Good job all around.

The John Hudson award for giving others technical help was won by Bob Evans. I believe he was instrumental in getting the '54 with the transmission trouble fixed. I should have snapped a picture of it but didn't. Hopefully someone did and can add it, or email it to me. They were working on this '54 with no ramps or lift. It was run up a small incline, then backed down onto the spare tire to lift it high enough off the ground to get under. Quite the sight!

Bruce,

We need to send you on all the tours. I love following along looking at all your great photos and reading your journal
Only photo that's disturbing is the $#@& plow

Glad the guys got the 54 fixed safely

Brad... we need to get you to sell all that modern crap you're driving, and get an old six! That way you could join us, and wouldn't have to just read about it! Secretly, I hope that some day one member comes to me and tells me that they joined a tour after reading one of Bill's or my journals. It would really let me know we accomplished something!

Bruce, I do have a six cyl..... to bad it's in the 60! While not as old as your's, technically all my cars are old! Looking to replace my newest Chevy - 96 Suburban that was stolen but can't seem to find one as nice.
Driving my only non Chevy a 79 Pontiac Grand Prix for daily driver that I got my licence in way back when it was brand new!

Can I bring my '51 to the Happy Daze Tour. The VCCA Southern Spring Tour is 2 weeks before in Bowling Green, KY. Don't have time of funds to go back home and get the '70 Caprice.

Chipper, The published years of vehicles are 1955 - 1985. I have had requests from members with other years of vehicles. We will accept any year vehicle older or newer on a space available basis. The deadline for registration is April 24.

Jim,
This may be interpreted as nit-picky but is not intended to be. Just trying to have events more consistent on years accepted and possibly encouraging younger people and their vehicles to participate in VCCA activities. Why if the VCCA accepts 25 year old Chevys for judging that this tour does not? That would make it up to 1989 model year Chevys in 2014.

Not to be nit picky, but I think this discussion deserves a post of it's own as it may pertain to touring but has nothing to do with the Cavendish Vt. Tour. That being said it seems to me the Happy Days Tour when started covered all vehicles from 1955 and on. I think changing to include all vehicles 1955 and up is a good idea.

When I started the HAPPY DAYS TOUR it was for 55 - 75 year vehicles. The muscle car years. It has changed almost every year since. I was asked the same question you asked. I have no response other than to say and I believe it will probably change to that before long.

As you know the Tourmaster can make a tour they host anything they want it to be.

The corvair replaced our 53 when the power glide died and I did not want to drive our 29, as we were going on to Novia Socia for a total of 2844 miles.

Al... It was your Corvair! I knew I'd get the answer to that sooner or later! Hope you enjoyed the Light house tour. I was hoping someone would do a journal or report with pictures on it here!

Brewster,

Thanks for all the photographs and the story accompanying them. A great contribution to us who didn't or couldn't make the tour. It appeared that all of you on the tour had fun and enjoyed each others company.

I wonder why you opted for the 51 instead of the 50. Seems to me that cruising along in the 50 with the top down would have much more enjoyable. I expect that Jane figured you would have attracted too many ladies a-wanting to ride with you and so put an end to that choice of car. Agrin

Thanks again,
Charlie computer

BTW: Down here in NC, we used to be able to buy gas first and then pay later. But not anymore. Too many "carpet baggers" passing through* and taking advantage of mom and pop store owners. They ruin everything about the Southern simple life. Do too!

* Actually they seem to never leave.

Charlie... The '51 ran 1200 or so trouble free miles, and gave me no worries whatsoever. The '50 gets me about a hundred miles before some new worry or problem crops up! You're right about Jane's worries though... I'm hot in a drop top!

I've just read the entire thread on your Six Cylinder Tour. Fun and entertaining....and really liked all the photos. Nice work. Thank you.
