Two questions, maybe ?
#1 what years was the Octane selector used ?
#2 On the Octane selector pictured below there are two brackets
together with holes the larger one on top. Is there a special bolt that goes there to hold the bottom bracket to the block and guide the top bracket ?
Or is the top hole there to put a socket through to tighten the bottom bolt ? OR ? ( I'M SO CONFUSED ) togo

I really don't have a good picture of that part of the distributor on my '38. The best I have is below but it doesn't show that bolt. I believe it's a shoulder bolt that holds the distributor in place (bottom hole) while allowing the vacuum advance to move the distributor timing (top slot).

Don't know if the type of grease matters much...As long as your "on top of it"...But, I use the white lithium stuff...I've been told it's a superior concoction...I usually give a twist anytime I'm under the hood...When it bottoms out, I refill it...

Keep that bushing lubed...You'll know it's worn when your dwell meter is not steady at idle...If it doesn't idle smoothly at idle, yet the dwell meter needle is steady...Start looking at your carburetor or valve adjustment...

Note that the octane selector pictured is for 1937 and 1938 only. The set=up on a 1939 and up is much different as the thumb wheels are eleminated.
