Hi,

I recently bought a 1959 Chevrolet Apache from a family member that I plan to restore. She told me she "thinks" it has a 1973 Monte Carlo 350 engine in it but I want to verify. However I am having trouble doing so.

I've done some research and found the location of the casting number and engine ID number on the block. The casting number is 3970010. However, where the ID number should be, the code that is stamped on that plate is 64045....everything I have found online suggest this number should be much longer and have letters in it. I was looking through an old Chevy book and it said some blocks that are "replacement blocks" might not have the full ID number on them.

Does anyone have any input on this? I've tried doing some searching about this but that has turned up nothing.

Thanks!

You will need to find the number stamped into the block. For a 1973 Monte the 350 2 barrel engine would have the letters CKA, CKL, CKR, CKB, CKC, orCKK for an example. These letters were also used for that engine when it was installed in the full sized car, Chevelle, Camaro, etc.
I believe it was stampped into the block surface just in front of the right cylinder head.

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked on the pad in front of the right cylinder where you would typically find the engine ID. All that was stamped on that pad was the number 64045. No letters to be found. I even cleaned the pad to make sure I didn't miss anything. Are you suggesting it should be on the somewhere else on the block instead of on the pad?

look on the oil pan rail of the block. over the counter blocks sometimes have CE stamped there. are horizontal broach marks present on the block's pass side front pad where the numbers you mention are stamped. is the stamping all in line as if done in a gang stamp holder? if no horizontal broach marks , its probably been decked at one time, especially if the broach marks are circular.if horizontal broach marks and the numeric stamping appears to have been hit individually( not in a straight line), then i'd guess the block was an over the counter with factory blank pad and someone(?dealer) stamped the pad. mike
