Looking for some information on 235 distributors.
#1 Will a 1953 235 distributor fit a 1956 235 ?
#2 what is the difference between them from the
standard transmission and the automatic transmission.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated..

Any 1937-1962 distributor will "fit" any 216,235 or 261 block for those years.....but not be correct.
The distributor was improved in 1953 and uses the taller cap for a quick ID.
The 1953-1962 distributors are all basically the same except for the advance curve which is determined by the weights and springs (under the plate).
The was a change in the material used for the gear in 1954 when the cam was changed from cast iron to steel. In the later years Chevrolet sold only the newer gear for replacement for what thats worth.
In 1953 there was more centrifucal advance for the stick engine compared to the PG.
In 1956 the stick and PG advance was the same and it was the same as the 1953 PG unit.
If you were touse a 1953 stick dist. in a 1956 engine you would probably get a lot of pinging at higher speeds when the accelerator pedal if floored or in hill climbing.
The distributor number is stamped on the plate next to the points.

As always Gene, you have explained everything very clearly.
These are the things that wanted to know.
I have a 53 power-glide distributor # 1112388 that I'm going
to be using while I have the 56 changed to a H.E.I. so I'm not that all concerned that the numbers match .
Best wishes to and your wife
