Don't mean to get off Chevy's...But I've talked about this Toyota forklift before, and I just found that it has no ignision condenser...?...How the heck would it work/run...The points look like heck...I'm surprised it runs...No place in the distributor for a condenser, it seems...Could I run one one the coil...? Thanks, Kevin...Sorry for getting off Chevy's... laugh

It may be built into the coil.

Some toyotas have the condensor attached to the outside of the distributor as well as near the coil.

I'll have to ask around some more, I suppose...It's got to go/be somewhere...One problem I'm having with this thing,is the it's a 1978...And a 1978 in the forklift world is totally obsolete...5R motor by the way...

Okay, I thought I'd mention I found a reply on another site ( Garage Journal ) that a condenser is not particularly a must have...Well, if it didn't come with one in the first place...I'll ask my electrical guy today, if I see him...Hear what he has to say...I always thought you had to have one to keep from ruining the points... laugh

I don't know of a standard point-coil ignition system that performs properly without a condenser. In fact the condenser outside case needs to be grounded for the spark generation to be intense enough to ignite the gas/air mixture at the spark plug.

Thanks Chipper...My thoughts exactly...Wonder how this thing even still sparks...You 'oughta see these points...Even with a condenser, I can't imagine why they're still working...I'll see if I can rig something to the outside of the coil or distributor...When I can find some replacement points...

All the toyota 5r engines I have seen have the condensor mounted on the outside of the distributor (case being ground). I would think any .22mfd capacitor connected between the points to coil wire and ground would work correctly though would need to be a fairly solid construction to withstand the vibration of normal engine operation.

Thanks, Tony...So the wire end of the condenser would "hook" to the ( insulated from the distributor body )wire coming in the the distributor, and the condenser grounded to the distributor body itself...? Or is possible to attach it between the + and minus on the coil itself...? Thanks, Kevin

Found the condenser...It was so covered with dirt and grease I couldn't find it...It's on the outside of the distributor...Below the vacuum advance diaphragm...It's no wonder I couldn't find it...Followed the coil/distributor wire from the side of the distributor to locate it.

Here's the good part...Went to NAPA and points/condenser, spark plugs and plug wires came to $28 dollars...Cap and rotor were fine...Thanks for the help guys, Kevin

Oil and grease are good things when they are where they are supposed to be but a real pain in the butt otherwise.
Glad you have the problem at least partially sorted.

Thanks, Tony...I've got the propane regulator rebuilt and back on...All new hoses...Radiator and block flushed...I think It wise to make sure the propane work, worked...Before doing the "tune-up"...Another thing I found while looking at the distributor is that the vacuum advance does not appear to to advancing...The plate on the inside does not move...The guy at NAPA said it probably wouldn't matter, as it's just a low RPM motor...I disagree on this matter...Or they wouldn't have an "advance" in the first place...Besides without some advance how I'm I supposed to "win" the forklift races...lol Just kidding...You know I hear youngsters do that at "Home Depot" late at night...They should be "fired" for such wreckless behavior...Good way to get yourself killed...Many folks just don't understand how dangerous forklifts are...Sorry, for getting so off topic...Ah, if only Chevies made forklifts...lol

Oh, by the way...Thank you Mr.A.M. for insisting this not the proper forum nor even the proper "site" for such a discussion...I just don't know where else to go with questions that experienced mechanic's might be able to help me with...And, lord knows I need help...Thanks, Kevin laugh

Oh my gosh..I thought everyone should own a forklift...? laugh

I have a warehouse and heavy machinery...Besides, it's fun to move cars that have been "improperly parked" when no ones looking.... laugh

As you might recall I'm moving to the "country" with a shop on the property and I have to "arrange" things to my liking...There are a host of uses for a forklift...Mine is a 1978 4,000 lb Toyota...

The 5r engine was common in the Hilux, Hiace and forklifts down here so my guess they used the same engine in your forklift.
