Has any memebers fitted an Oil Breather to the Differential Housing on their 1930 - 31 Chevrolets ?

A mechanic suggested that it is a good idea as it allows for a release of pressure when the Differential Oil heats up under driving conditions.

Can you pls advise , Thank You,

For a better response, you might want to post the above in the 1929-32 forum instead of here in the Vendors forum.

I have thought about it several times but haven't done it. There are breathers available that are about the same size as a greas fitting. It could be put in the cap near the top. If you try it, let us know how it works out.

My 30 has a hole drilled in the top bolt that holds the cover on. I do not know if that is correct or not.

If you have the original non-sealed bearings and cork/leather/felt seals they will allow pressure from heating and cooling to be vented. If you have sealed axle bearings then you need to provide a vent.

Chipper ,

I thought i did post it on the correct site 1929-1931, Sorry .

Anyhow I have fitted a Diff Oil Breather ( Toyota p/n : 90930 03031 ) at the top of the differential cover plate bolt hole . It seems to do the job .

At the time of posting i was unaware that it had Sealed Axle Bearings fitted, as i had purchased New Bearings and Modified Seals ( AF-82), Gaskets from the Filling Station , they did not suggest an Oil Breather in their literature, maybe they should update their site .

Thanks for the information and help as usual .
