To keep beating this horse to death.................
In mid 1951 the threads on the filler cap were increased from 1 1/16" to 1 1/8". My somewhat educated guess is that is the point when the all balck cap was changed to the black cap with a yellow ring. (info. from 1953 parts book).
A person was quoted says his research went back 30 years. That would be only 1983. By 1953 any battery installed in a 1948 Chevrolet was long gone. Most batteries were good for two years back then, perhaps three if you were lucky.
We sold Delco batteries in the parts department for replacement and I would like a buck for every sale I made at that time.

So Gene one last question, looking at the picture of the Delco circle battery in this thread on page 4, if it weren't for the yellow rings on the caps would you concider the battery correct in appearence?

YES.... If it were for a 1948 of mine (or even my 1950) I would paint then rings black. The original pre 1951 filler cap looked like the cap pictured less the ring - hence it was smaller in diameter.
That battery shold be approved by a "informed" judge.

Russell, here you go,what have you done about the battery issue?I replaced the battery and starter after almost being stuck 50 miles from home..The Aero is on jacks getting a Spring cleaning and although I have turned it over and am very happy with the results, need to get on the road to do a full test

Bruce, that is one fine looking battery. In my opinion, worth at least 5 EXTRA judging points.

Do you recall the name of the person you talked with at AAB?

Did you finely receive the two data tags?

I know you must be excited about the 2013 driving and show season. Who knows, you might even wind up on the cover of some magazine. Agrin

You should post a few pics when you get it all shined up and ready for the road. Inside and out!!

Bruce, have you talked to Delores about your battery failure? Or have you figured out the possible cause of the failure?

Bring us up to date. dance

Russell I am still in the judgement process on the new battery.Although I did have it on the charger for a short while,it now reads the proper voltage 6.3...I did purchase a new back up battery and am useing it presently and having not reinstalled the Delco, maybe this week end...I got way too many things in the fire right now and completing very little...my best guess is there is nothing wrong with the Delco and will never really find out what happened the day I was stuck far from home with out a paddle????

Is 6.3 the voltage of a fully charged 6 volt battery?

CC,

I know by your enthusiasm that you want the car to be as close to original as you can get it. I was wondering that after having shelled out 400 plus bucks that if you have the correct battery or not. There seems to be some confusion about that.

Some thoughts:

a. Will the judges know if it has the correct battery or not? I suppose that some will and not take off points accordingly.

b. Some judges may not know and not take off points owing to their lack of knowledge. This may be true even though the battery is actually correct.

c. If the judge does not know and thus does not take off points for an incorrect battery then a Wal-mart one is as good as the 400 dollar one.

d. What if you have a "Delco" or "Chevrolet" battery but it is the wrong one for the year or the caps are the wrong color, is that as bad as having an obviously incorrect battery? Should it be?

The bottom line is whether buying a high dollar "Delco" or "Chevrolet" battery is worth it if it is not going to guarantee no points loss. Or whether a relatively much lower cost sticker and a little paint will work just as well as a correct or incorrect embossment? I think you get the picture.

Another bottom line, if the judges give a pass to competition with an incorrect battery and you have shelled out for a correct battery - with neither getting points deduction - do you have grounds to be a little upset?

This here battery stuff is downright confusing, Is too! I'm just trying to get a handle on it. Agrin
