Heat riser spring on my 39 M.D. is missing, have ordered a new one and have a question ? When installing a new spring do you put the end into the grove on the riser shaft with just enough tension to snap it on the rod,or do tighten the coil one round and snap it on ? The coil does expand when heated doesn't it ? Thanks in advance.......

First, make sure the shaft and flapper valve move freely both open and closed and have a slight amount of left to right movement, so that the valve works freely. I then make sure the spring has enough force to barely keep the valve closed and won't fall off the shaft on a old engine. note where the slot in the valve and the weightis when the engine is cold and then after the engine is up to operating position that the valve opens. If I remember correctly the force of the exhaust is toward keeping the valve open. I live in Texas (should be the same in AZ.)and never have any problem when the valve stays open, but in a stored engine the valve will often freeze in the shut position.

You've answered all my questions. It's been so many years since I've done one,and with sometimes having memory fade.
Things over the years seems to be more trying.

PK it's amazing what you can find in the shop manual..But not as fun as finding the answer on the chatter
