So we have one advisor saying roll pins are the way to go, and another says use nails or some soft material.

How are we common folk supposed to know the correct way when the ones that are seen as the advisers of the site have differing views.

I have used nails, but according to al least one adviser that is incorrect.

Gentlemen, I am confused.

Cheers

Ray

P.S I hve recod several dizzys without the luxury of a Sun machine, I am happy they run better. Do our Gurus believe a dizzy is not done properly without one. Also I cant imagine that every so called work shop in by gone years had a sun machine.

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great"

I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

No not every workshop had a "sun machine" but those that specialized in sports tuning did. In later years a dwell meter or an oscilloscope would show most if not all problems a sun machine would.
I have used both soft material and roll pins with no problems. The soft material would save other parts in the rare occassion that a distributor or oil pump locks up.

Holy Cow guys! Chipper prefers using nails for the distributor gear pins.......I prefer using roll pins because they are the correct length and diameter. Other dudes have used both. Use the type of material that you prefer for a roll pin. It's no big deal.

Ya, mine froze last year when I neglected to turn the greeser and after breaking it loose I used a nail. Still going.

Chevy37,If you are talking about the pill-sized felt, what does it lubricate? There doesn't seem to be anywhere for the oil to go.

Since the cam rotates back and forth on the top of the distributor shaft, the felt pad (wick) lubricates the area of the shaft that the cam rides on.
