Hi Everyone
I have a battery ground strap from Vintique for my 31 coupe.
It staps on the frame ...correct? or to the engine block?
Also ,do I need any particular gauge or type of cable for the positive side to
the starter? And is length of either important.

Cables are critical to starter speed. 2 ga is absolute minimum for cable size. Most use larger. Originally ground attached to frame but later moved to bolt on top of transmission. The shorter length the better.

Not intending to hi-jack the thred here but we are currently running 6 guage on the '32 for a starter cable due to it was the only thing available to us at the time. How much more bigger than 6 guage is the correct cable for the starter and the filling station does offer this, right? Also how significant might the starter speed be? Right now for 6 volt it seems reasonable but if bigger cable is what i really need.....

Thoughts?

I'm using 1 gauge on my '38. Many say 0 gauge is the minimum but I've had good luck with the 1 gauge. Remember a six volt starter will pull a lot more amps than a 12 volt. 6 gauge would be for a 12v application. Most FLAPS should be able to order cables for you if they don't stock them. If they can't or won't, go to a welding supply store. The Filling Station lists cables but not the gauge.

Or try a Farm Supply store, [Fleet Farm] up here. They have the 00 gauge with the ends already on them in different lengths.

What about starter speed? Will i notice any great significant change? Like i said, with 6 guage it seems reasonable and i see no wire torque...i hate to buy if it's really not needed.

6 gauge is way too small for six volts and that size cable is for 12 volts. For six volts you need a much large gauge cable. I have a 0000 gauge on my six volt system and it works great. With a larger gauge cable the starter will spin over faster.

Joe from DePere, I don't recall seeing your '37 Chevy at any of the local car shows in the Green Bay area. When I do see one, they are usually hot rodded.

Hope to see it at NWTC comming May 1st.

Hi Chevy1778, I can assure you that my car is not hot rodded. More like a 20 footer. Ive only been to that meet a couple of times. But usually have prior commitments at that time in May.

OK, the positive cable is 1 or 0 gauge, any advantage to using the same on the negative cable?

I would use the same sized cable on both as they both carry the same loading.

Yes the original cables were fabric covered. Reproductions have been available in the past. Have not looked recently so can't tell if they are still out there.

Yep, but they don't give them away.

Why don't you buy the correct cable from the Filling Station? Sounds like you need one of their catalogs.

I just purchased a set (btry cable, ground cable and the cable from the switch to the starter) from Y&Z. They are awesome. They make them for the specific vehicle and are as close to the original as you can get with todays materials. As mentioned up top: They are not cheap.
