The generator has been rebuilt (twice) and it is still overcharging when raising the rpms. Cutout is the original delco remey
What could be the issues?

Did you try adjusting the output by moving the third brush? What is the output of the generator?

Junkyarddog, Thank you for the info!
No... we did not adjust the third brush ....but we will now! The shop that rebuilt the motor has the car and is doing the work reinstalling the generator so I don't know the output but the ammeter is spiking all the way to 20 amps with rpms.
Is there a specific way the bush has to be moved?

Move the brush clockwise looking from the back. Or if mounted then it moves away from the person doing the adjusting.

The third brush is moved as far towards the motor as it will go and the generator is still sending out 8+ volts and over 20 amps....Any suggestions as to what to do next to decrease the output?

Check to see whether the field lead to the 3rd brush has not been connected to the + main brush, and vice versa. If they have been crossed over, then the field is connected directly across the armature, and you will have no control over the output by moving the 3rd brush.

CJP Thank you for this info. I will check and let you know. There is almost no change in output when the brush is moved...

As CJP suggested your wires may be connected incorrectly. However, if it turns out that they are not, then you have a good chance that the new armature that was installed is incorrect for your application. I have run into this many times before. The correct replacement armature for your generator is a number 733. By the way, why didn't the shop that rebuilt your generator catch the overcharging problem when they tested your generator for output?

John, Sorry I haven't returned your call yet. As to the armature, the NOS one that I shipped you does indeed cross to a 733. I will call you soon to discuss your problems.

The generator was wired incorrectly as CJP and Junkyard Dog had suggested. The mechanic rewired it as explained and it's now charging correctly. I pick it up this morning!
Thank you for your knowledge and help with this matter. The VCCA has been a real help with this project.
Thanks again!

Just wanted to clarify in case there were any assumptions being made. I was not the rebuilder that rebuilt and did not test the generator. Everyhthing is checked/tested before it leaves my shop. Just wanted to make sure no one made the connection between me and the other rebuilder.

Jason helped correct this. He shipped the correct part at a reasonable cost and went out of his way to help. Thank you!
