On the pre-1940 Chevrolet headlamps, a dual contact bulb was used, typically with one element having 32 candle power for the bright lights, and 21 candle power for the dim lights.

I see there are dual contact headlamp bulbs having two 32 cp elements. What is the purpose of having two elements of the same candle power rating?

The output is the same but the aiming is different. High beam throws the light higher, further down the road.

I used 50-50 CP bulbs in our 31. They are hard to find. I found a full box of them in an antique store in a small town.

What's the part number? I didn't know they were even made. I'll do some searching. I got a whole box of the 32/32s from my FLAPS so I have what will probably be a lifetime supply but I'd like to try a pair of 50/50s to see the difference.

Tiny,

Thanks for the reply. I got the headlights on my 37 pickup re-wired and installed the 32/32 bulbs and road-tested it tonight, and I can see the difference.

I have a lamp bulb chart that lists a bulb number 1188 as a 50cp/32cp dual filament. Don't have a listing for the base type so can't guarantee they will fit but might be worth a try.

Wrong base Chip. The PN for the 32/32 is 2330 I believe.

I use 1000 for the 32/32 bulbs in my '31-2s but the later 2320, 2330 bulbs have the "prefocus" ring on the base. Original 21/21cp early 30s bulbs are 1110.

Reviving an old thread.

I've ordered 1188s from somebody on EBay. They don't last long. And I mean maybe an hour on low beam. Voltage from the generator is fine so the problem is with the bulbs.

I know that FS has them, but I have been looking for another vendor. I just ordered a 10 pack from Candlepower, Inc. for $15.59 including shipping. I should have them in a day or two. I'll report back on how they work.

Search ebay for 1188 bulbs then click on ebay motors. I see a number of NOS bulbs for sale.
