i tried beating on with hammer only goes so far then stops but still wobbles. i got another one off of a early model truck with a 235.i tried it but it starts getting tight right away acts like it doesn't want to go on as far as the original. should i keep beating ,should i pull keyway out part way, would it be binding up on it?i just bought this 58 and don't know alot about this type balancer all the ones i ever worked with had the bolt in the center

I would not beat on it. Every time you hit it, you are putting some severe shock loads on the main bearings. I would bet a long bolt and use it to get it on. I am not familiar with this model year, but another thing you can do if there is no rubber in the item is to warm it up in the oven so that it expands. A very, very light oil will help too. something thin like sewing machine oil or WD-40.

The 6 Cyl engines as well as the 265-283 engines do not have a bolt in the center of the camshaft. There is no other way to install the balancer other than driving it on with a large hammer. Putting the balancer in an oven could destroy the rubber between the pulley and hub.
Perhaps it would help if you used emory cloth to clean the interior hole of the balancer and front of the crankshaft - and then use a little WD-40 for lubrication.

Thanks Gene for explaining. All I can say is yuck! I now appreciate driving them on when a bolt is used.
