My old 38 coupe has a 235 engine witha 6V alt. The orginal belt was ragged so I changed it. The replacement belt made a whinning noise so I went back to the auto store and the guy said try a more narrow belt. I did and it was really quiet. Today it broke with about 50 miles on it. What is the correct width? The belt that broke was 3/8 inch wide. Anyone know why the wider belt made a noise.

Is the groove in the alt pullet the same size as the water pump and crankshaft pulleys as this will determine what size belt you should use. If the belt rides on the bottom of the "V" it will slip and burn out, if it rides too high on the "V" the pulley will cut the sides off the belt.

Thanks. I think the new belt ( 3/8" )was riding to deep in the groove.I'm going to try a 15/32" belt. The larger 1/2" belt made a loud whinning sound. 15/32" should work. THANKS AGAIN
