This is old hat for you old timers and master mechanics but some of the new guys might be interested in the rebuild of a steering gear. Although this is a ’50 pick up the procedure should be about the same for any of them. Here are a few pictures of how I did mine.

Final assembly and adjustment will have to wait till I get the mast jacket back from my paint supplier who is mixing me a match for it and the steering wheel.

Denny, I'm a VCCA dropout now but in May 2009 G & D published some parts info I have discovered. Included is a Shell Oil grease that is a direct replacement for the discontinued GM steering gear grease.

It's great to see someone else doing some machining to create unavailable parts!

Thanks Ray, I'll have to see if I can dig that article out and look that number up. I've been using and recomending Penrite Steering Box Lubricant, can't go wrong with something that is made specifically for the task at hand.
