I have run across this engine and the number on the pad is (LAQ 464739) Is this a 1953 235 engine from a powerglide? Would appreciate any help, Thanks

LAQ is a 1953 Power Glide engine. It will have the narrow pulleys for the fan belt. If you install it don't forget to install a pilot bearing
I would not install it with out rebuilding or overhauling it first.

I'm a little puzzled about this engine. The valve cover is held on by two bolts up throught the center of it like a 216. Shouldn't it have 4 screws (2 on each side) holding it if it is a 235? Could someone have changed the head to a 216 head?

I think the first 235s still had the center studs. But anyways, I have a 216 valve cover on my 235, I just took out 2 of the rocker bolts, and replaced them with studs, just like on the 216, no big deal.

All of the Chevrolet engines (216 & 235) before the 1954 year models had the valve covers secured by the rocker studs and acorn nuts and rubber washers. 1954 was the first year for the four bolt valve cover. All of the 235 engines can have the bolts replaced with studs and the pre-54 valve covers installed, you need not change the cylinder head.
