my battery turned into boat anchor, is it possible to simply connect up a 6v charger/booster unit to my battery cables + ignition lead and start/run the engine? Will it destroy anything?

You need the battery in line as a ballast.

Yes, the battery charger may take a flying leap out the shop door.

No way can a battery charger (except a large commercial unit) turn over the engine, let alone provide all the other requirements.

A medium sized charger would probably run the ignition only but I would doubt there is a charger made that will crank any engine without a battery with some charge.

I have a charger with a 200 amp starting position, It will start a car, or small tractor, with a completly discharged battery, or without having a battery installed, however I always install a battery or use one of my portable battery booster batteries. I can start a car, truck or tractor engine with a generator with it, with the battery disconnected, if the battery is shorted internally.
Never start an engine in a vehicle with an alternator system without a battery connected, or remove the battery cable from the battery with the engine running above an idle. The battery does act as a ballust for those charging systems. Just my amateur opinion.

The battery must also be connected with an early type of generating system that uses a cut-out as well. For example, if the car or tractor is running and the ground cable on the battery is disconnected, the generator will go into a high output and burn out all the lights and etc., so the battery must be in line to act as a ballast.

I also have a commercial 200 amp battery charger and mine won't start a car without the battery in place. Trying to start a car without the battery in line would probably not be a good idea.

BECAREFUL you could power the car and ignition with a six volt charger and use a twelve volt battery to jump the starter but you should make sure that only the starter is the only thing being powered off the twelve volt battery and disconnect it after engine is started. AGAIN BECARFUL.
